Rita Margaret Corbin Burns

Rita Burns

The National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation (NWCAVE) honors the life and legacy of Rita Margaret Corbin Burns, who passed away on August 7, 2013, after a courageous decade-long journey with breast cancer.

Rita served as a dedicated supporter, donor, and founding advisory council member of NWCAVE. She also contributed her leadership to the Northwest Conference Against Trafficking Steering Committee in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Jane Velez-Mitchell Journalism Award Selection Committee in subsequent years. Her unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and education left a profound mark on both the organization and the community.

For more than 30 years, Rita worked in public education as a teacher and high school assistant principal. She inspired countless students through her dedication to learning, mentorship, and kindness. In 1987, the State of Florida recognized her as “Teacher of the Year.” Beyond the classroom, Rita lived fully and boldly: she piloted small planes, advocated for animal rights, spoke against violence, and celebrated life with joy. Even while facing breast cancer, she defied the odds—traveling widely and skydiving alongside other survivors.

Memorial services were held in both Ohio and Florida, where family, friends, colleagues, and community members gathered to honor her memory. Attendees shared stories of her generosity, adventurous spirit, and unshakable hope.

Jane & Rita

Rita’s vision of a world without violence and exploitation continues to inspire the mission of NWCAVE. In her honor, the family requested that donations be made to NWCAVE, ensuring her legacy of compassion and justice carries forward.

Rita Burns will be remembered as a beloved educator, advocate, and friend whose light continues to guide all who knew her.

We love and miss you, Rita.
